Care and Conditioning of Flowers

The general principle of caring for all flowers is to ensure that they can get plenty of water and that the water remains sweet. This is why you should remove any leaves below the water level. There are also various crystals which help to keep the water sweet including a spoonful of sugar, and are said to prolong the life of the flowers. You should throw away any dead flowers immediately as the decaying process sets of a gas(ethylene) which kills of other flowers. Apples also give of this gas especially in a warm room and therefore flowers should not be kept near them. Some hollow stem flowers such as Roses and Chrysanthemums get airlocks preventing the flowers from drinking and this can cause the heads to droop. You can avoid this by cutting the stems under water. If an airlock forms it can be rectrified by re-cutting the stems in warm water.
